Tied End or Dead End?

A tied end (see Law 24) is where the shot cannot be determined as a bowl from each player is either touching the jack or is equidistant from the jack. If 2 bowls are touching the jack there is no such thing as one touching the jack more than the other!!! As you have already learned, a tied end is recorded on the scorecard as an end played with no shot to either player.

A dead end (see laws 19 and 20) occurs if the jack is moved by a bowl in play which causes it to:

pass above the face of the bank - Law 19.1.1;

pass completely outside a side boundary of the rink of play - Law 19.1.2;

come to rest in any hollow in the face of the bank Law -19.1.3 (not likely to be seen in Spain!); or

come to rest at a distance of less than 20 metres, as measured from the centre of the mat line to the nearest point of the jack wherever the jack has stopped - Law 19.1.4. (Do not move the jack!!)

Unless the competition rules state otherwise, a dead end is replayed. From what direction you ask!

A dead end must be replayed in the same direction unless the skips or opponents in Singles agree to play it in the opposite direction. ( If the jack and bowls need to be transferred to the opposite end of the rink before the end is replayed, they must be transferred in a way which avoids distracting players on neighbouring rinks.) Law 20.2

What happens if as a marker I move the jack or a bowl?

We are now into the realms of displacement!

This situation is covered by Laws 37.4.2 (bowl) and 38.4.2 (jack). In either case, you replace it to the point agreed by the two players. If they do not agree you put it back to its former position - and apologise profusely! But this will not happen - will it??

What does PTB stand for?

Remember, if there is an umpire present and a situation arises you are not sure about, or there is a very tight measure -  PASS THE BUCK!
