MARKERS COURSE
HOME STUDY MATERIAL

1. Marker's Duties - Youtube video

Read Law 42 of your law book and then watch the free Youtube video by World Bowls which covers skills required for umpires and markers. The first section of the video is geared towards umpires and from section 31 onwards, markers. Before the course it is important that you watch the Marker's section. Measuring techniques will be demonstrated when you attend the practical part of the course but reviewing the umpire's section of the video will give you a head start. However, the following items are not used in Spain:

  • Boundary Scope

  • Boundary Liner

  • Long Tape (on a stand)

  • Telescopic Measure

Please remember that Markers do not move any bowls, other than dead bowls when they have been given permission to do so. When measuring, the players should remove any shot bowls which do not require measuring, placing them in a group, and clear away any bowls not in the count.

As a Marker, when measuring try not to actually touch the jack or bowls with the measuring equipment. Use chocks as necessary.

Finally, we generally use a trolley to scoop the bowls once the shots have been declared. While the players are considering the shots, the Marker should place this in front of the head for one of the players to use. The Marker should not start scooping up any bowls.
